When it comes to shopping, Northbrook has no shortage of options. The village center has boutiques and a Sunset Foods, while the Village Square is a broader shopping complex across town from Northbrook Court. You'll find department stores such as Saks Off Fifth and Nordstrom Rack as well as Trader Joe's, Cost Plus World Market, and Marshall's. You can also find a rare Baha'i Temple nearby.

The community grew up as a stopover on the route from Chicago to Milwaukee, where it was famous for its five saloons. Famous filmmaker John Hughes also lived in the area. Some of his movies were set in this fictional town. The Chicago Botanic Garden is nearby, and the Forest Preserve District of Cook County manages large tracts of land for recreational and educational use. There's plenty to do in the area, too.

The city's history begins with its first inn, built in 1894. The bartel me family moved from Chicago to Shermer ville, where it served chicken dinners. The bartel mes also offered $1.00 salads. By the early 20th century, the Northfield Inn was one of the premier restaurants on the North Shore. The Schinleber Collection has photos from early Shermer ville. Today, the historic inn is home to the Northbrook Historical Society and Museum.

Visitors to Northbrook will have plenty to do while in town. You can explore the downtown area, check out restaurants and boutiques, and visit a theatre. UL's Northbrook office is officially designated as its corporate headquarters. In 1952, the company purchased 153 acres of property in Northbrook, Illinois, about 25 miles north of downtown Chicago. Over the next few decades, UL gradually moved its operations out of Chicago to Northbrook. The campus is large and provides ample room for future growth. It also features a spring-fed lake used to protect buildings from fire. The lake was used as a temporary water source before water mains were built to the property.
