The village center has boutiques and a Sunset Foods, while the Village Square is a broader shopping complex across town from Northbrook Court. UL's Northbrook office is officially designated as its corporate headquarters. In 1952, the company purchased 153 acres of property in Northbrook, Illinois, about 25 miles north of downtown Chicago. Over the next few decades, UL gradually moved its operations out of Chicago to Northbrook. The campus is large and provides ample room for future growth. It also features a spring-fed lake used to protect buildings from fire. The lake was used as a temporary water source before water mains were built to the property.
